It's the most common heating call we get all winter, and it's usually a part that costs less than a tank of gas.
You hear the furnace start. The igniter glows, the burners light, everything sounds normal — and then, three to seven seconds later, it all shuts down. The furnace may try again two or three more times before giving up entirely and going into lockout.
Nine times out of ten, that's a dirty flame sensor.
What a Flame Sensor Actually Does
The flame sensor is a thin metal rod that sits directly in the path of the burner flame. It isn't a temperature sensor and it doesn't control anything on its own. Its only job is to confirm that the flame is really there.
It works on a principle called flame rectification. A flame conducts a tiny electrical current — measured in microamps — from the sensor rod to the burner assembly, which is grounded. The control board watches for that current. If it sees it, the board knows there's a real flame and keeps the gas valve open.
If the board doesn't see that current within a few seconds, it assumes the burners failed to light and closes the gas valve immediately. That's not a malfunction. That's the safety system doing exactly what it's designed to do — shutting off gas that isn't burning.
Why It Stops Working
Every time your furnace runs, combustion leaves a microscopic film on the sensor rod — oxidation, carbon, soot. Over a season or two it builds up into an insulating layer.
The flame is still there. The sensor just can't read it through the buildup. Current drops below the threshold, and the board shuts things down.
A healthy sensor typically reads somewhere in the range of four to six microamps. Once it drops toward one or two, you get exactly the symptom above.
How to Check It Yourself
Turn off the power first. There's a switch on or near the furnace that looks like a light switch. Shut it off. Shut off the gas valve too.
Find the sensor. It's a single rod, usually with one wire running to it, mounted at the end of the burner assembly, positioned so the flame wraps around it. Don't confuse it with the igniter — the igniter is thicker, usually has two wires, and looks like a small ceramic block with a flat element.
Remove the mounting screw and pull the sensor out.
Look at the rod. A clean sensor is shiny metal. A dirty one is dull gray, brown, or black.
Cleaning It
Use fine steel wool or a light abrasive pad. Rub the metal rod until it's shiny again. That's it.
Don't use coarse sandpaper. It leaves grooves in the rod that collect buildup faster, and grit can embed in the surface. You're polishing, not grinding.
Wipe it clean, reinstall, restore gas and power, and run the furnace.
When Cleaning Isn't Enough
Sometimes the rod is pitted, cracked at the ceramic base, or the wire insulation is brittle and falling apart. Sometimes you clean it and the same thing happens two weeks later. At that point the sensor is worn out and it's time for a new one.
They're inexpensive. Most people replace them in ten minutes with a screwdriver.
A few things that look like a bad flame sensor but aren't: a cracked heat exchanger, a bad ground at the burner assembly, a failing control board, or a gas supply problem. If a new sensor doesn't fix it, stop there and call a licensed technician. Anything involving the heat exchanger is not a DIY repair.
